So Maya, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself? And what do you do?

 

Maya Hughley 3:42  

Absolutely. So you actually gave me a wonderful intro. I have to remind myself of how I got here all the time. So I really appreciate it. I did. I graduated from UT in 2017 with a degree in marketing. And I was telling Kelsey, right before we hopped on, it was like, you know, you leave school, you learn everything for a book, and you get on the real world. And you’re like, I don’t know how to do marketing. Like, that’s my degree. But like, I don’t know how to do it. And so I ended up with a job in sales that wasn’t really for me. And then I kind of just stumbled on a digital marketer. And you know, they were teaching people the things that I wish I had known in my college education. I got a great education from Muti, but it was like the hands on just how do you get a product in front of people? How do you get people to notice you? What is the customer value journey? Like how do those things work? And so I saw this company making that for other people. And I just really wanted to be a part of it. And luckily, they brought me on to the team. So I’ve been a content coordinator at Digital Marketer for two years now. It’s July. And so what I handle on the team is actually a lot of making those things that I was excited to see which is great. So if you guys are familiar with digital marketing, If you’re not we do educational training all about how to do marketing. We it’s across industries. So I know you guys specialize. A lot of people, a lot of listeners do eecom, which is awesome. Services, anything like that, you know, we kind of cross all industries. And we just kind of put out helpful guides, video lessons of just tips you probably need right now, actionable things you can do right now, to boost yourself, your products, everything you’re doing. So yeah, that’s the gist of it. I help on the production side of making those things happen and making them appear and updating them and keeping things fresh and new has everyone always wants and I think that’s it. That’s my day to day.

Very good. Now, you know, I am not doing like, I don’t want to just shout out for no reason. But Digital Marketer is incredible. I subscribe to it. I’ll add to it for years. I’ve got their lab. actually I think we have the elite. But anyways, our team goes in there for refreshers. And it’s so well laid out. Not only are the lessons incredible certification is incredible. So you can go in, and you can get certified for whatever you want. And it’s all digital marketing based. I really love the content and would highly suggest anybody just checking it out and finding out a package that works for you, if you’re at that point. The other thing is if you’re talking to a digital agency, just ask them, you know if they’ve gone through the program, or what program they went through, to get their advice, because you know, there’s a lot of not so good places out there that you can get advice from but Digital Marketer is very solid.

Yeah, I so appreciate. It’s so nice to hear, especially when you’re the person that works on the content that you I know people use this, like people like this and they use it. But yeah, in terms of agencies we do, we’ve kind of branched in that direction. So even if you are looking for an agency, we have people, we have a certified partner program that are they’re trained in digital marketer stuff, and they can they are taking on clients. So if that’s something that listeners are interested in, that’s also an option. Very good. Okay. Tick tock, tick tock about it. Let’s do it. I’m excited to see if people have any, any weird Tick Tock questions, I get them a lot.

Well, you know, what, if you’re listening, and you’ve got some Tick Tock questions, even if you if you haven’t been on, Tick Tock Tick clubhouse, a lot of people, you know, hear about it, they don’t really experience it. I’ve seen some really great just Amazon guys going in there giving some insight and just getting a ton of influencers. Yeah, just by dropping a bit of information every day. But anyways, where can we start? Where? What is Tick Tock? And how can somebody start?

Yes, so honestly, that is the best place to start. Because I forget how many people have not experienced Tick tock, it’s a great talking point. But for people that just for a lot of people, it’s a dancing app. It’s an app where people go to do dances and listen to music. And I would say so Tick Tock as a platform itself is short videos, and normally about 60 seconds or under for people that are verified or influencers they can go up to three minutes. And and I think what is defining about Tick Tock besides just being a video app, because I know people will be like, well, Instagram has reels, you know you can find videos on Twitter, what Tick Tock has that special it’s its algorithm. So when it when you open Tick tock, you’ll probably get a lot of things you’re not interested in. If it’s your first time, you’re just gonna get whatever is most popular at the app. The more you interact with videos, the more you like things, the more if you stick around to watch the whole thing. Tick Tock takes that information, which freaks some people out totally get that we can talk about privacy thing, right? We can talk about it, but it takes that information and then adjust what you see. So if it’s like man, you really liked this video about dogs. We’re gonna shoot some more animal content your way. We’re gonna leave the dancing off. You only like comedy videos, you only like recipes you only like, you know, home decor. And so I think what kind of makes tik tok special is that you end up with and actually I recently saw Tick Tock has a newsletter for businesses because they are interested in getting more advertisers and more businesses on the platform. Because they’re kind of upping their ad game. They want people buying ads more often. And in their newsletter, they talk about how with Tick tock, it’s not about the traditional demographics like Facebook might be where it’s just like people of this age people that are into this thing. Tick Tock is more about subcultures they call it so it’s like it’s not it’s grouping people Kind of how they would like to be grouped, which is a weird way to say that, but it’s letting people kind of self identify as interested in something and putting those people together. So as an advertiser as a business, you can connect with a group of people without even knowing how old they are really, or you know what race they are anything like that what gender they are, it’s like they’re interested in cars, and I sell car products. This is the group that I want to be in front of. So that’s what I think it’s kind of makes sense Tick Tock apart, makes Tick Tock a little special, is that grouping feature in that kind of sub culture feature?

Now, if I was going to get onto tik tok, and this has been, this has been my arc. What is it? Achilles heel? Yeah, I’ve tried to get onto Tick tock, don’t do a good job of it. That’s probably my weakest platform. And, you know, it’s, I’m the old guy, you know, with the beard. And when Kelsey is here, and let’s do some tik tok videos. And Kelsey is not here. I get I Okay, stop, you know, do another poll. I can’t do that. Yeah, no, Kelsey is here. He takes care of his dad. But how, what is an easy way to start going in there? So like, I get very, very nervous in front of a camera. Yes. And a lot of people do. And especially if you’re doing it live. It’s scary. Mm hmm. What are a few techniques that you can do on Tick Tock to just get going to roll out some material?

I love that question. I think that’s a great question. Because a lot of people don’t even make it to that point. So the fact that you have it, and you’re trying it is awesome. I will say making tic tocs is so much harder than just being an active participant and tic tock, you can watch tic tocs all day long. But getting on there and putting your face out there and making something and trying to get in front of people is so difficult. So if you’re out there trying it norm, you’re trying it, it’s so hard, don’t don’t beat yourself up about it. I would say for people that either don’t really like being on camera, or they see those tiktoks that are like heavily transition heavily edited, like Barry put together, the easier way to start is actually to start text base. A lot of it sounds weird, because it’s a video app. But what I have noticed has been working well for businesses, specifically that use tic tocs are kind of taking Instagram, like content of like tip videos, or, you know, suggestions, things like that, and actually putting the text on the screen. And just setting that to music. They’re in there, they’re in there, their faces in there, they’re pointing out the tips. They’re not saying anything, they’re not acting anything out. It’s a song, they’re showing tips about their product, they’re showing tips about their services. You know, I’ve seen like, five copywriting tips. It’s a 32nd video, they put the tips one at a time up on the screen, there’s a song playing. That’s it. And so it’s like that is a very simple way to start. That can be very engaging, if you get in front of the right people. And I think that’s the part that was frustrating for people is because they’re like, I don’t know how to get there. I don’t know how to get in front of the right people. And like in terms of that, it’s it’s a hard thing, because tik tok is so algorithmic that you can’t kind of seek people out. They do do hashtags. They do, you know, challenges of some kind. So you can use trending music, you can use trending hashtags to try. But that is the part that I would say is probably hardest is the finding the audience. But in terms of content, if you’re doing Instagram at all, if you’re writing blog posts, I would say that there’s probably a way to take that and make it into a simple, really simple tic Tock. And for a lot of people, that’s going to be the best way to go maybe forever, because I don’t think people connect necessarily with brands that try too hard to be trending. Some brands do really well. I know people that are on Twitter that just like love Wendy’s Twitter, like Wendy’s is good at being on Twitter. They’re good at cracking jokes with the youth, like they’re, they’re very into it. And for some brands, like that’s just not their voice. That’s not what their brand is like they’re not going to be able to hop on the fortnight Minecraft, whatever trends that 14 year olds are on and for a lot of people that’s not where you want to be anyway. So it’s gonna sound counterintuitive, but I think you can really ignore some of the trends if you have content that people want to see. And just making sure not getting too bogged down in what everyone else Making but putting out something that is actionable for people that they want to see. And in terms of e commerce, product reviews are huge. I have been in there’s one tick tock creator whose name I cannot remember who I think is on part like 80, something of just buying things from Amazon and saying what she thinks of them, and just doing reviews on just doing reviews. And that’s her whole Tick Tock account, that’s Tick Tock account is just this is what I bought. This is why I like it or don’t like, talk to my wife. Exactly. And like for people out that’s helpful. Like that’s helpful content, because they’re like, Yes, I should get that. Yes, I was interested in that. I’m glad you bought it, I can see how it works. And so it’s like, things like that. It’s so simple. It’s so small, she’s not doing super heavy editing, she’s taking a couple clips of using a product, setting it to music and saying, Yeah, I liked it. No doubt. Someone does that with combinations. They buy weird food from the grocery store. And they will take suggestions from the comments and things that people like to eat. Try them on camera. Do I like it? Do I not. And so that’s kind of Yeah, it’s not the training. It’s not learning choreography. It’s not, you know, making your own music. It’s just, you know, I have something interesting. And I have something people want to see, which can be a hard task. So I know I’m not putting anything very easy out there. But I hope that kind of demystifies it a little bit.

So when I’m doing tech talk for them, for the most part, I’m just talking about something that’s updated. Yeah. And that’s new. I get a few views. And again, I’ve really got to try to get my head around it so I can expand the market. But for a brand. I think this is a great opportunity to go out there. Let’s say you’re selling soaps, and you can talk about different types of soaps, recipes. The sense aroma therapy, you know, the effects of natural soap over commercial soap that can’t even say their soap, you know, go out and look at dove. You know, they can’t even say that their soap? I think it’s dove or Irish spring? I think so. Yeah. You know and find out. You know why? Also, like you said with the reviews, but maybe even I’m not sure. But people providing you with video testimonials. Yeah, you put Can you put that on your tik tok channel?

I believe you can. Yeah, user generated content, I think you can do that.

 

Norman Ferrar 17:34  

So this is interesting. And what I what I want to talk about in a second is, is the influencer side. But before I get to that, let’s talk about Alright, so you’ve got it the different types of content you can put onto your tik tok profile or not profile. But account?

 

Maya Hughley  17:55  

Yes, yeah. So in terms of like the different types of content, I would say, what also kind of turns people away is that everything should have audio, everything should have music of some kind, doesn’t have to be trending doesn’t have to be something with lyrics. It can be just like classical. But it’s honestly weird. If you post something that doesn’t have audio talking is totally fine, like talking and no audio. But if you’re going to post something with text on the screen, audio should be involved. It’s all video based. And I’ve seen a few will though use and one of the things take stock days is they’re constantly upgrading their filters. And so it’s almost Snapchat style, where there’s like a bunch of filters you can use. But the ones that are most interesting are the ones that get a lot of use our green screen. So you’ll be in the front, there’s kind of a green screen behind you. And you can upload an image. So if you want it to upload your website and talk over it, you could do that. And you can upload a video clip. So you could upload you know, scrolling through your website showing off products, and you kind of narrating what you have, what you’re selling, what it why it’s good. So I think that’s a great way a great type of content to put up. I think text based tip content is always good. Anything that is kind of actionable, where you want people to go do stuff it is I will say it is hard to get people to leave the tick tock app. And that’s kind of Tick Tock claim to fame is like once you start scrolling. It’s like Pringles once you pop, you can’t stop like, and that’s actually one of the things that I don’t love about Tick tock, whoa, there. There are other things that I don’t know about Tick tock, but we can get into that. But in terms of linking people back to your website, from business perspective, it’s not as clean as like an Instagram would be. You can have one link in the bio but from the tick tock feed you. Sometimes you can get like a link above your name that’ll take you somewhere but for the most part, there’s not an easy way to get people to leave the app. Go check out what you have. So you can kind of lose people in that way. So that’s kind of unfortunate. And I hope they do update that for businesses, because I think that would be huge. If you could get directly to a profile. I will say it’s different for ads, ads, of course, have a direct link. But if you’re just someone making content, you don’t necessarily get that. Yeah, I’m trying to think if there’s anything I’m leaving out in terms of content to post

could you could you ask? that’s similar to Facebook or polls and surveys? Questions?

 

Maya Hughley  20:36  

That’s a good question. So they have recently implemented a question feature, where people before it was, you know, someone would comment on your tic toc, and then you could respond to that comment. So if they asked a question, you could, like, select that comment and then make a video response. So if someone was like, you know, asking about a product like soap for, we’re gonna keep rolling with the soap example, because I think it’s a great one. So when asked what other colors the soap comes in, in the comment section, you could take that make a whole video around it, show off everything, you know, recently, they’ve also introduced on top of that a question feature where they don’t have to respond to a specific video, they can just go to your profile and ask a question. And so you can just have like a list of questions. And you can make video responses to those questions, and they’re not necessarily attached to a previous video. And I think that’s super cool. Because you can just get like an FAQ going, which is always nice to just answer those direct questions about products, you know, anything like that. Their profile, I believe it is, I think it may be one of those things where you have to have a certain number of followers. But I have a feeling I’m probably going to roll it out a little bit wider. It feels like a feature that more people are going to want and it seems like a feature that’s getting used more regularly so I’m don’t quote me on it. I know we’re live everyone out there. Don’t quote me on it. But I think you will start to see it more often. And I think it’s super helpful.

Yeah, you know, to get to get noticed. So we want to have SEO on our tic Tock account. Any thoughts on that?

 

Maya Hughley  24:16  

Yeah, that is honestly been hard. For me. There’s a lot of conflicting advice out there. Some of which I had given because I talked about Tick Tock a lot. Which Funny enough, I became the tick tock person at Digital Marketer because I was just the person on tik tok. I was just the young person in the office using tik tok and that’s how that kind of came about. So a lot of this has been trial and error. So in terms of SEO, you know, your caption is they’re relatively short, you don’t get a lot of space for a caption, your blog, your profile on tik tok itself. The image is going to be really important because you get that small little circle on your video. So having your brand there is going to be super important. Um, hashtags is where I think people conflict a lot. I, my original advice was like, hashtags aren’t that important, because people aren’t usually searching hashtags a lot. However, big brands will use hashtags that people will use to try to get more eyes on their video. And those videos will be unrelated to what the big brand wants. So be like, you know, McDonald’s will sponsor a hashtag, and they’ll sponsor a challenge. And they’ll want people to post things on that hashtag for that challenge. And then someone just making a comedy video, we’ll just use the hashtag, to try to get more eyes on that video. And it’s unrelated, which is not necessarily a problem, it’s probably a problem for McDonald’s, because that’s not what they’re interested in. But in terms of you making content out there, that is not at all frowned upon, if you want to try to get eyes That way, if it’s a brand that you know, you know, or is related, and they have a trending hashtag, like, there’s nothing wrong with sticking it on your video, even if it is slightly unrelated. But that has been the major issue with hashtags and Seo In that sense, it’s like, people have embraced it, but only in a way of like, I’m gonna get more eyes like I’m gonna get, I’m gonna get more people to see this video that’s not related to this hashtag at all, which makes hashtags not super searchable. But I will say if you go broad, like, if you have a broad topic, and you just, you know, hashtag dogs will get you so much. And like that is a hashtag that people will look up and just watch Funny Dog videos all day long. So the more specific you get, the less I would say a hashtag probably helps in terms of SEO. But for broad topics, even topics like hashtag marketing, hashtag design, things like that, will kind of get you some eyes, because that’s kind of a broad topic that, you know, people will search. But honestly, I would say in terms of SEO, if anyone is on Pinterest, it reminds me of that a lot. Like kind of how, you know, the search function is really good. It’s very algorithmic, you get very good related posts. But in terms of, you know, your SEO, it’s like, you get a very short caption, you get some hashtags, that hashtag is gonna pull up some unrelated stuff. But it’s a very similar kind of feel in that way of being like this algorithmic, you know, you can try your hardest to reach the right people, but you’re going to end up in the wrong place sometimes.

What about, um, like, with, again, trying to think of how do I get something to go more viral? Yeah, instead of 100 views, maybe 101 101 views? But, but like, Can you do a contest? Or is there something that you can like other than hashtags? Yeah, can get you noticed?

 

Maya Hughley  28:01  

Yes, absolutely. That’s a great, and honestly, I didn’t even think to bring it up. So I’m glad you asked it in that way, because I would have completely glossed over it. Absolutely. I think so one thing that I see a lot, especially from creative type people from artists that may be so for example, I see a lot of people that do pottery and will sell their pottery through tik tok. So it’s a video of them making something and then you know, talking about their store, you can absolutely do, you know, comments for giveaways, likes for giveaways, that sort of thing. And it’s a little trickier than Instagram to see who, it’s easier to do comments, because you can actually see the person you don’t. And I might be wrong, but you don’t really get a list of likes on. Like, you can see it in your notifications, but it’s hard to like pull that whole list over to be like, Oh, I’m gonna give, you know, 50 people liked it. Now I have to figure out who this 50 people, it’s gonna win something. But, you know, if you ask them to comment, a specific thing, sometimes people even just, you know, comment for the algorithm. Like, you can just ask people like, I want this to reach sell. And so I’ve seen people, you know, like, if you’re into this certain thing, like if I’ve reached you, you’re probably into x, y, z. You should comment. I want to know if I’m correct. I want to know that, yes, that’s what you’re into, you know, if this Tick Tock ratio, you’re into Amazon, frogs, and, you know, books, if that’s you, I want you to comment, identify, like, Yes, that’s true. Because I want to keep reaching, and they’ll be like our people, I want to keep reaching people like us. And so that’s a way to kind of appeal to people’s, you know, sense of community on there is to, you know, call out directly like you’re saying this ticked off because you like this because you’re into marketing because you’re into e commerce. And you know, I want to find more of us. And like that’s a way to get people to kind of connect with you to respond to you. Because the algorithm does, like you’re saying in terms of virality, I think Tick Tock is interesting because everything is kind of up for grabs, like, you know, the better your video does in the very beginning, the farther it’ll go. But it doesn’t mean that people won’t see your video, six months later, like, it’s still kind of just out there, they could stumble upon it. And so getting comments on it and getting comments early on, it will kind of help accelerate it a little bit, push it a little bit more. And then the further it goes, it’s like, you know, snowball effect, the more it’s gonna keep going. But I will say, just because you know, you weren’t viral the first time, doesn’t mean you won’t be viral later. Keep trying, but also, you know, your old videos are still up there. So it’s like, I wouldn’t even I wouldn’t even bother taking things down and being like, Oh, I need to clean up my Tick Tock like, unless it’s like a gorgeous, I will be like, you know, just leave it See, someone might connect with it, someone might need this. It’s six months from now, they might stumble upon it. And then it’ll pick up steam again. There are plenty of videos that I think show up, even on my page. So the main page of tic toc is called before you page and that’s where they just put things they think you’ll like my tic tock, I’ll see things that clearly happened, you know, Christmas time, like they happened in December, but for whatever reason people are noticing now and they are thinking more people will like it now and it’s reaching more. And so it’s like the person who posted that in December, probably just my microphone fell out. The people who posted in December probably aren’t expecting someone in July to still be commenting on this Tick Tock. But it just kind of happens like that. So yeah, I would say in terms of going back to the original question, giveaways, things like that. You can I think in a way that people kind of try to do with Facebook ads to where it’s like you’re trying to Facebook kind of frowns upon calling up people directly. Like hey, you do you want XYZ Are you trying to lose weight like they don’t like it, but if your face is in a video on tik tok, and you’re saying, hey, you’re probably saying this because you’re interested in losing weight. I want to be on the fitness side of tic Tock helped me get there. I’m selling XYZ. Like they you can be very direct with who you’re trying to reach.

Oh, very good. Now, the The other thing too, for people that are new, you don’t have to have a polished video. No. It’s better just to be very candid, right?

 

Maya Hughley 32:27  

Mm hmm. Absolutely. I would say unless video editing is like your specialty. And like that’s your thing. Because there is, you know, people that just edit videos, they’ll do pretty landscapes and that’s a whole side of Tick Tock just set it to music, drone footage. That’s the whole thing. If that’s your thing, go for it, do it, post it wonderful. Don’t try to make that too. You don’t have to learn Adobe Premiere right now. Or Premiere Pro to be to be good on tik tok, I think, especially when you’re doing things like product reviews, or talking about your own product, people want to see your natural environment. And that’s kind of where Tick Tock and Instagram kind of have a competitive dynamic is a lot of people feel like Instagram is more about the polish. Like if you’re posting an Instagram picture and he’s you can’t post a bad picture. Like everyone knows you don’t post the blurry ones on Instagram, you don’t even you know, Instagram videos are a little bit more. But like, Instagram is like a almost like a pristine kind of lifestyle. Like you want to put your best foot forward. And Tick Tock is kind of like, what’s up, I cried in my car today. Like it’s very, it’s very like, this is what I did today. This is what I’m feeling like. It’s almost like the diary. Whereas Instagram is like the public persona is like tic tocs what you’re writing in your diary, it’s very this, like, put your face on it. Let them know, if you’re a business owner, people want to hear about how your business is going. If you’re frustrated, as a business owner, you can get on there and like this is why it’s hard. This is why owning this business is hard. And not in a way to get people to kind of pity you. Because of course, no one’s going to be like oh sucks for you. But in a way that is very honest and connecting with other business owners. I think there’s a way to be authentic, and share, you know, why you feel like things may be going poorly or things may be going great. And I think you’ll find that people really kind of connect with you on that and want to other business owners want to connect with you on that. And so you’ll kind of find a community, a community that way as well. I know someone in the comments mentioned that they’re competitors on tik tok, and they have a lot of followers and it’s like this is a great point for competitor research. Right like, but also, not only do you have to befriend your competitor on Tick tock, but there is kind of this kind of camaraderie of like we’re both doing the same thing. We’re both business owners. We’re both doing this. So maybe Not necessarily with your competitor, but connecting with other business owners. It’s like, first of all, it’s free. It’s like it’s a free way of, you know, almost mentorship, talking with people building a community that way, instead of, you know, paying a bunch of money to get into some of these big like incubators, you can kind of reach out and commiserate and get ideas that way. So it’s also such a good platform for that.

I know. I mean, you just hit something I really thinking about but not only your competitors, but could you reach out to let’s say, you’re selling soap, and you could reach out to somebody with essential oils or skin lotions. Yeah.

 

Maya Hughley  35:44  

Absolutely. That would be an excellent way to do it. So one of the stories that I saw very recently, there is a girl on tik tok her I think her tic Tock username is at other people fund. So she has a T shirt brand where she donates a part of the proceeds to helping people get therapy. That’s what her whole deal is. That’s what she wants to do. And so she sells a T shirt that says we should be other we should see other people and by other people, I mean, therapists. That’s, that’s her brand. That’s what she likes. And that’s what she sells. And so she posted a tic toc after the Grammys, where Harry Styles was onstage, not wearing a shirt, made a dumb joke about if you need a shirt, you can have one I’ll get you a shirt. And people in the comments were like you should talk to his stylist. They all knew who his stylist was. They tagged him in the comments. And she messaged him on Instagram and was like, Hey, everyone said that I should talk to you. I think your clients would really like this shirt that I make. Let me know if you’re interested. And he ended up buying it. He bought two shirts and a tote bag. There’s a picture of Harry Styles with this tote bag. So it’s like, you never know who’s gonna be in your comment section. You’re never gonna know who knows who. So if you are a brand, you know, looking for a partnership or willing open to a partnership. Absolutely. That’s a great way to see who’s out there and who’s doing the same thing. You are even geographically. Like if you’re looking for, you know, essential oils in Toronto. Like, there’s a way to be like, man, we both do. We both make crafts. We both work on this. We both work on that we could improve this together. That’s a great way and it’s a great idea.

Very good. Now let’s talk about I think probably most of the people that are listening right now want to hear this Yes. They hear about the the elusive influencers. How do they get to that influencer to help promote their product?

 

Maya Hughley  37:45  

That is the question of all time. Absolutely. That is the question and I totally understand because influencer as a topic is almost as elusive as tik tok is a topic where people just like I don’t like I know it exists, and I know it’s probably great, but like, I just what are the solid what’s the foundation of it? Um, so I would say, in terms of influencer for tik tok, it’s a little bit of the Wild Wild West, which I think people have already picked up on the vibe of it is a little bit of the Wild West, it’s new, nothing set in stone. There are very formal paths for Tick Tock just like there are for Instagram. What I would recommend and what I think about Tick Tock specifically is if you are once you figure out who you’re trying to reach, I would kind of break it down into like the smallest niche. So if your soap maker, I would get specific with who your avatar is, like, is it you know, moms is this soap for moms that you know want something natural for their kids? Is it for men because the scent is whatever is it Who’s your specialty, that sort of thing. And then I would kind of go to the smaller accounts. It’s kind of fun, not so small that like no one’s watching their tic tocs but you know if you can find people that are into house cleaning, you know, beauty Tiktok they’re into makeup and beauty, you know, those kind of overlapping essential oils, things like that. I would say at the point where Tick Tock is now an account of you know, like a smaller size would be an influencer for you for like kind of free products like to try something new to try your soap which can get risky so not not always recommending that to just give things away for free but I would say that is a good place to start if you’re trying to dip your feet in the toes of finding influencers for your brand specifically is to which gets into the category of a micro influencer, which is the first thing who, you know, has strong influence in their small network, instead of going, you know, straight to Kim Kardashian, you kind of break it down a little bit. And that’s an easier way, I would say, than going straight to, you know, the influencer websites where people are posting their profiles and offering to enhance. And, you know, I would say, the micro influencers, depending on the product will sometimes even have more sway, because they’re in this community that really trust and respect that opinion. And once you get beyond that influencers are something you’re like, yes, this is micro influencers working for me, I want to go bigger, I think I can go bigger, I just need more reach Tick Tock in their ads has a more formal sort of influencer relationship. And I think someone else asked about, you know, if there’s a separate business platform for Tick tock, there’s not a separate business platform, they do have an ad platform. So if you’re a business looking to do ads on Tick tock, that’s a good way to connect with influencers there because Tick Tock can help you with that. So they will take will help you connect with the influencer? Yeah, that’s my understanding. I haven’t done it. So I can’t speak from direct experience. I’m going off of Tick Tock business newsletter, which if you guys go to tick tock has a business section. Like if you go to tick tock website, if you’re a business, they have a section of their website for you. Because they want you they want you on the platform, they want you giving the money as everyone does. So they that’s where I’m getting my information from.

But for the most part, I would say those ads on Tick Tock are made to look like tic tocs. So they want influencers in them. They want faces that people recognized using things doing things promoting things, because for the most they’re obviously trying to trick people. They want to keep you from scrolling because you see someone you recognize. And so there have been several people from tik tok that had gotten to a verified promotional influencer level. The one that comes to mind is a for people that are on tik tok, they will probably remember kombucha girl It was a couple of years ago. It was a girl who tried kombucha for the first time and just could not decide whether she liked it or not. And she just pulled all kinds of faces. And now you know, she’s verified she now hosts a podcast for tik tok. Like she is like kind of the the breakout star. And so Tick Tock is really encouraging of that. And like that’s a space where it’s like, if that’s your person, if you think she has the audience that you want to get in front of Tick Tock is very encouraging of building those relationships. But of course, once you get to that level, that’s where it starts costing you real money. So yeah, influencers, it’s very broad. I’m not, I’m not the expert influencers, there are many. So and again, just like Tick tock, you’re gonna get conflicting advice. And the only, the only advice I can give as someone who has not done it personally, is your customer avatar is going to be key. And if you don’t have a solid customer Avatar and a very specific customer avatar, you’re going to end up spending a lot of money for not the results that you would like, because the influencers, you know, would follow a contract to the tee, they’ll do everything that it says in there, they’ll post as many times as you ask them to if that’s the agreement, and then none of their audience will care, because that’s not who you should have been in front of and you should have been working with.

So with z, we’re talking about micro influencers. Yeah. So micro influencers when you’re talking about micro influencers on Instagram, typically it’s about 100,000 people or less on tik tok. Is that roughly the same amount?

 

Maya Hughley  44:08  

Oh, that’s a good question. I don’t know if anyone has put numbers yet to tic tocs kind of micro influencer account. I would say you could probably do it with fewer followers. Just because on tik tok followers and reach don’t always equate people can like their tic tocs a whole bunch and just not want to follow the account. So I would say you could probably for micro I would say Tick Tock you could probably get away with like 10,000 followers 10,000. So that’s more nano influencer on its right. Yeah.

Oh, and one other thing. So you’ve you’ve told us about a really great way like with the with the ads. But let’s say I see that nano influence or micro influencer and I want to approach them. They’re perfect personality for me. I love what they do. How do I reach them?

 

Maya Hughley  45:02  

Yeah, that’s tough. It is. It’s all about kind of building that relationship, I think you do have to do, you can’t come on is you’re kind of trying to date them a little bit before you get married, right? No, no, no one wants people sliding into their DMS all the time. You guys wouldn’t like it of strangers. Like I love you. Here. Let’s Let’s do this. So it is kind of it’s a very nuanced kind of outreach. I think if I could recommend anything, it is really engaging with their content, seeing what they’re doing on Tick Tock seeing what they’re doing outside of Tick Tock putting in the research, and then coming at it with a very clear case for you know why you think that relationship is beneficial. So for example, we’re going to keep going back to soap, I think soap works perfectly. If it is, right. I don’t know why it works, but it’s stuck in my head. So it’s gonna work well. But if your target is mothers, if you think moms have young children, like that’s who you want, and you find a mom who’s on tik tok, posting very engaged posting products that she uses with her kids, to a kind of small audience that seems to be very engaged, they comment on it, they asked her where she gets things, that would might be a great target for you, I would look and see if she’s doing things elsewhere is Tick tock, her only place that she also on Instagram, and just kind of, you know, engaging with your content, making sure that you know, you kind of exist to them. liking it, commenting on it before you actually do the outreach of, I think we should work together because, because I think people just want to know, I mean, people love compliments. First of all, they love that you’re watching what they do, they love that you’re engaging with them. But I think they want to know that, you know, it’s not just, I want you to put my product out there, it’s you’re doing something awesome. And I see that you’re doing something awesome. And I think that this would work for you. And not being too pushy with thee, I want you to post this to all of your for I want you to talk about it all the time. But just like, you know, I make this awesome organic soap, it seems like that something you would like you’d be into? Yeah, how would you be interested in working together? Have you worked, and especially with the nano influencer, or micro influencers, like have you worked with the brand before is that something you’d be interested in is that something you know, I could talk to you about and kind of moving that relationship incrementally a little bit slower than you probably want to, you probably want to go straight to like, my soap is amazing, you should want it and your followers will want it. So you should post it to you know, kind of just building getting to know them as a brand. And not just kind of because people will feel taken advantage of very quickly, especially at the micro level. So you don’t have to become their best friend ever. You don’t have to, you know, necessarily take them out to dinner, I’m sure you could if you want it to just kind of getting to know what they like, why they do what they do, why they post what they post, and engaging that way. And then kind of building that relationship from there, I think, is a lot better, especially if you’re a smaller business that may not have the dollars to offer, that building that relationship. And you know, trying to make it long term. Like if you foresee growth for both of you together, you want to communicate to that to them. Like if you can help them grow, you want to help them grow, because that helps your brand grow and vice versa. So I think you have to kind of get creative with what you have to offer and what can benefit them. Because I think you’ll be surprised that you know people love money. But there’s something that can replace that or substitute for that in terms of reach and growth and support. And you know, visibility, especially if that’s within their goals. So if you’re talking to someone who has, you know, goals to be bigger goals to do more, that’s a great way to connect.

Yeah, and a great way not to connect. And, you know, we’re entrepreneurs, and we have passion for our product. But leave the ego at the door, because you won’t get anybody really wanting to take your product on with the ego you already mentioned, you know, the way to approach it and ego will get you shut down. Although you love your product, you know, check it at the door.

Yeah. And also, I would say if you have a physical product, it would save you time and money if you don’t just surprise people with it. Like I don’t care if they have a PO box or whatever in their bio. If you just send them a thing. They’re probably not going to post and even if they love it because you just dropped it off. Yeah, like it’s a Nazi. Keep going back to a dating metaphor because you know, it doesn’t have to be but like consent is key here. Don’t just surprise people with things. You know, have a have a conversation about it, make sure they want to get that agreement. And I think you’ll you’ll end up wasting a lot less of your time in their time.

Right? And what you know, one thing I just wanted to bring this up to Kelsey brought this to my attention. And it was when you’re creating a post, one of the ways to get it to pick up picked up is also when you’re looking for the trend look for music that’s trending. Is that correct? Absolutely. Yes. I wanted to prove him wrong. I wish he would have said no.

 

Maya Hughley 50:41  

Yeah, here’s the thing about that though, sometimes the music just does not match. And I think that is worse than if you didn’t have audio at all. If you just have a weird, really weird audio that does not match the vibe of the video. I think that’s worse. So you know, but absolutely audio that’s trending people. So for people that haven’t been in tik tok, UX wise, the audio plays at the bottom, and you can see what it’s called. And if you click on it, it will give you a list of other videos using that audio. And so if it is something where the videos are related, or they’re just funny, or you’re like throwing out tips, and that’s the song that you use, you know, people can click on that audio and find you if you’re using something that’s popular and that people are are looking at. So that’s another way that people can just stumble across shear. One thing we didn’t talk about that I will probably mention because if you’re just starting on tik tok, you will get very confused by the concept of duets, and stitches. So that’s something that other platforms don’t have. But it is another thing that sets Tick Tock apart. If someone makes a video and they allow it in their settings you can do with them, which means your video plays right next to their video. So you can comment on their video. With a video they’re side by side, the audio will stay the same so you can react to things people do reaction videos, you can you know, some one, I was gonna say a weird thing. It’s not weird, but people that are into acting or cosplay will act out half of the scene, and someone else will do with them as the other half of the scene. So those videos will play directly side by side. That’s a feature that other social medias don’t have. I’m not gonna say it’s like, advanced, but it is definitely more complicated than just making your own video never heard of that. Yeah. And then the other one that’s very similar to stitches. And stitches is a similar concept where it starts with someone else’s video and then cuts to your video. So you can respond to that. It for both of them, it tags the original person in the comments. So you definitely want to keep that tag, they will get very upset if you take them out. But yeah, you want to keep the tag of the original person. But that’s another way of you know, if you again with the soap if you find the essential oils person you can do with that video, Mary Oh my God, I use your essential oils and this soap. It’s such a big seller and respond to them directly. And it will be you can’t do it live like it’s still in like this video was recorded and you’re responding to it. But it is another it’s a weird thing that only Tick Tock does. So I couldn’t let that slip by and just send people on to the tick tock universe without kind of explaining that one.

Oh, I’ve got one last question before we get into the listeners questions, but what about repurposing? Can you take a tick tock video and can you repurpose it on Instagram or over on Facebook

 

Maya Hughley  53:44  

so that has recently been not a big thing but something that Instagram has been trying to cut down on because they realize how much of a competitor tic toc is and that way and so for Instagram reels which people may be familiar with because Instagram pushes it pretty hard is very similar in feed in nature to tick tock you can technically record on Tick Tock download it post that to reals Tick Tock always includes the tick tock watermark and Instagram if you try to upload something with a tick tock watermark to Instagram. It’ll post but they shove it way down like they don’t like it. To get around it you could record and post the video separately to the two You can also record on Instagram reels and go into post it into tik tok in the opposite direction. I have not noticed that tik tok has an issue with that the same way that in the same way that Instagram does in the reverse. I haven’t noticed that that has been an issue. So yes, repurposing totally works I would recommend it, especially when it comes to like Instagram stories. If you don’t want to use the Instagram rules platform You can post a tic Tock as an Instagram story, and it will play just fine. And that’s a good way to repurpose without kind of hitting the Instagram hates me wall is to post that directly to your story. And just kind of get the most bang for your buck, I highly recommend repurposing all of your content in some way. Because it’s hard out there to keep making things. As someone who makes content for a living, it is hard to keep coming out with brand spanking new ideas, day in and day out, especially for the people out there that are trying to run a business. And they’re not just doing content. They’re also doing the business and the accounting and the products. And it’s like how can you expect me to make content and Instagram content and YouTube content? And so yeah, I highly recommend repurposing, just you know, with the tick tock to Instagram, it’s a little funky, Instagram doesn’t like it. So I would either record natively, so just recording on your phone posting separate, but it’s the exact same video, or, you know, posting to your Instagram story instead of to the real feed is how I would recommend doing that.

Yeah, and the other way you were talking about content, there’s a lot of pressure, you know, trying to come up with content. But going back to what we talked about, at the very beginning, user generated content user,

it’s so good and tick tock is so perfect for it. You can if you can find people out there, or if you know people that are on Tick Tock that have used your your product or whatever you’re selling, I think you know getting them to make a video or if they’ve already made a video and you can again stitch do it respond to that. That’s amazing. And I think it works really well for a lot of I find a lot of creative Tiktok uses that people that do art paintings, I saw a girl recently who his whole thing was pet portraits. She makes portraits of pet, you send in a picture of your pet, she paints it, she has an Etsy store. And she had to close commissions because she could not handle the number that she got. And all she did was record herself getting the picture some of her process the final photo, and people were like, absolutely, I need that. And was like this, I had to close it. And also I’m sorry, it’s gonna take a couple months for me to get you your pet portrait. I have so many. And so that’s like that’s just user generated. Like someone ordered this for me. This is what it looks like, this is why they ordered it. And everyone’s like, Yes, I connect with that. I want that.

So if you take that example. So you know if you’re if you’re listening right now and you’re okay, how do I, you know, reach out to those people. One of the things that we do with our products that we’re selling, is we put an insert in, not everyone has the same insert, but with a lot of them will have something very simple. tag us for or just tag us on Instagram. And then you can go to Instagram, and we do this for Amazon posts, but we just download it to the photos in on a Mac and then just upload it to Amazon posts. But just imagine if you reached out to the people that did that and ask them for a video. They already are passionate about your product.

Absolutely. And if they’re not on tik tok, it’s like you know, ask them for the video and ask them for permission to post it on Tick tock, and you can do that you pardon yourself. You don’t have to write to them.

Is there anything? Absolutely. So we talked about it a little bit, but we also talked over it. So I think it’s helpful to break it down into like, just the like he said, the core strategy is I would say, you know, finding an audio that works for what you’re trying to advertise, read the same vibe, you know, nothing, not a horror audio for your fun product, that sort of thing. Finding an audio I would say, you know, the tech isn’t crucial, it should be kind of naturally filmed, but also not blurry. Not pixelated, like, you know, looks nice, but doesn’t have to be fancy produced. Definitely use your caption space, you don’t get a lot of it. So use it to your advantage. If there are any related hashtags, or you want to add a hashtag, don’t be afraid to do that. I don’t have metrics if it works, but it won’t hurt to throw a hashtag on there. And then in terms of, you know, for your specific product or brand, I would my main strategy is calling out directly who it’s for, I think, for tik tok, that is a scroll stopper. If in the caption, or in the video somewhere, you’re addressing who you want to be looking at that. You can get away from that, the more the more you do it, but I’d say if you’re just starting out with advertising a product brand on Tick tock, you know, say who you’re trying to reach, identify them. When people are scrolling. If they they hear something that speaks to their identity, it’ll it’ll go into pause for a little bit, and maybe watch your whole 60 seconds. But those are the Those are my core strategies. That’s my kind of main advice. And I’d love to hear if it works. If you guys are doing stuff and want to want to show me I’d love to hear about it. Okay, great. from Andrew, is it best to do Tick Tock ads, or just make a page and try to make trendy videos?

 

Maya Hughley  1:01:32  

Oh, that is a good question. Um, so I don’t have I don’t have a lot of experience with tic Tock ads. I know what Tick Tock tells me what you always have to take with a grain of salt. For the same reason that people have issues with tic tocs, privacy and all of that. In terms of what’s best, I think it’s better to start with the videos, start on the free side, get a feel for the platform, get a feel for what works before you try to go through tic tocs ad platform. And even if you’re not even making the videos, but you’re just a passive viewer, I would set up a brand page at the very least interact with some tic tocs. See what you think would work best before you go through the whole tic Tock funnel and actually spend your money and then realize that it’s just not for you. Because the one thing I didn’t address up top is that Tick Tock might not be for some of you. And that is some major advice that I think all entrepreneurs need sometimes is just because a social media platform exists does not mean you have to use it. So just because Tick Tock is out there and it’s popular does not mean that that’s the platform for you, if your audience isn’t there. So you know, if your audience only likes Instagram, if your audience only likes Facebook, I wouldn’t even waste time trying to make tik tok videos trending. But I will say you do have to experience the platform before you write it off completely. So if you’ve just been afraid of tik tok, or you think it’s only 14 year olds, like, it’s absolutely not go see who’s there. Go try to find your audience. And if you really can’t, then I would say leave it alone. Put your energy into you know, something that’s going to really have results for you. And so that’s why I would suggest you know, starting with making a video or at least experiencing the videos before going through the TIC Tock business ads section, and doing a sponsored posts.

That actually leads right into the next question. Hey, Roslyn. So how would you prioritize the social media platforms of Instagram, Facebook, tick tock and YouTube, most likely for going viral or growing an audience? unique aspects of Tick Tock you like over the others?

 

Maya Hughley  1:03:46  

Yeah. rozlyn? That is a great question. So yeah, like I said, you know, it’s where your audiences that matters, I will say in terms of virality Tick Tock is an easier viral platform, because you kind of just put into this bucket that people can sift through, whereas Instagram, on your actual Instagram page, I find that it’s a little bit harder to get people to you, of course, the hashtags, the SEO and the caption, all of that. But as they’re scrolling, their Instagram feed, they’re mainly seeing people that they know. And with tik tok, you’re only seeing people that you don’t know. Like, it’s very hard, you know, you can add friends on tik tok and see what they make. But on your for you page, they are mostly showing you just brand new content, people strangers. So I think virality is a little bit easier because you’re automatically shown to people who don’t necessarily know you. Whereas Instagram if you just have, you know, if you’re not doing Instagram ads, you’re just, you know, branding your Instagram, it’s a little bit harder. You have to send people there, it’s a little bit harder for them to stumble on to you. Doesn’t mean it’s bad doesn’t mean you know, if your audience is there, they’ll probably find you And you probably especially if you’re doing something visual, I think you need an Instagram, I think you need people to physically see a photo of what you’re doing. I think it’s always good to have. So yeah, I would prioritize where your audience was, or is and in terms of unique aspects of Tick Tock that I like more than the others. Tick Tock is really really good at I don’t want to call it a time suck because that feels mean. But like Tick Tock is really good at locking people in to their app. Instagram was is good at it and was probably better before you know it kind of, it’s not old, and I don’t want to say it’s old and sometimes people will say Instagram is dead. But

sorry, cat knocked my headphones right out. Um, yeah, I don’t think Instagram is dead or old at all. I think people are now just it’s so commonplace. And it’s so normal for everyone to have an Instagram that it’s not so much of a it’s not so much of a, you know, time waster as it probably used to be. Tick Tock because it’s so new. It’s still, you know, it’s still what it is. And it still walks people in and I’m, I’m sorry, his name is Whitman. And he needs what’s awesome.

Yes. So, yes, yes. In response to? That’s a good question. The answer the question, I don’t specifically do any sort of consulting on Tick Tock or anything like that. It is still very new. I do a lot of my research for digital marketer and four, you know, kind of helping people in our ecosystem get information. So I’ve done a couple of digital marketer podcasts on tik tok. I’ve helped on some blog posts on tik tok. And so my role is more of, you know, research, trying things, learning things about it, bring it to the digital marketer community. So, if you’re asking as a brand, if I can help, you know, get you out there on tick shop, I’m probably not even the person you want to ask. I’m in this instance, I’m a, I’m a student of Tick Tock and not so much a teacher. In terms of like doing research and things like that, I will say, if you have any specific questions, like I am happy, if you find me on, you know, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, I’m on all of those. I again am also on Tick tock, I’m harder to find. And that’s on purpose, because that’s where I do all my research. But in terms of, you know, getting help, I would say, if you want to check out, you know, digital marketers free stuff, digital marketers blog, things will be posted there as we learn them. And as we try them out as a company. So you don’t have to pay us this is not a plug for going to spend a bunch of money a digital marketer. You can if you want, but we do have free resources. We do have newsletters and a blog where, you know, if you’re not ready, if you don’t want to join, if you’re not ready to join, we’ll be posting the things that we learn
