How and Why – To Sell on Walmart Marketplace

By Michal Chapnick

By now you’ve heard about Walmart Marketplace – The world’s largest brick and mortar takes on the world’s largest online retailer in dramatic fashion!  As a buyer, you might have had a browse around this new online behemoth. As a seller, you absolutely cannot afford to ignore it.

Marketplace, like Amazon, Etsy, Ebay and every successful online seller, has it’s own preferences – and it’s own rules.  When you are an insider, you have worked through learning these, and the specific Walmart Marketplace language. Before you are in insider, it can feel like wading through cement to get started.

Having a guide to take you through the process will skyrocket your potential for success. Let’s get started.

How and Why to Sell on Walmart

Walmart Marketplace is in a great position to learn from the mistakes of other online sellers. It’s still new and vastly underpopulated with 3rd party sellers. Getting in to this world early gives you a huge advantage over sellers who will be scrambling to sell with Walmart this time next year.  Getting approval is your first, big step.

Getting Approved

Wallmart

Some online sellers are happy to work with anyone who has pulse. Not so for Walmart. Selling on their site means letting you risk their reputation. Walmart use the application process to weed out problems in advance. This means they will want to see your track record of success on other platforms

Tip 1: Only experienced sellers need apply

Your application for Walmart.com will ask you very specific questions about your selling experience on other sites – including your own website. They want to know how many active products you have, your annual revenue, your average cart value and even how many years you’ve been in business.

Walmart is not looking for novices with no previous experience. Gather this info for all your current and previous online marketing when you start your Walmart application.

Tip 2: Use your current account with Shopify, Deliverr, or PayPal

Your Walmart application process can be vastly simplified and sped up if you apply through your account on these applications. You’ve spent all this time setting up your Shopify store, let it be your gateway into Walmart!

Deliverr is an order fulfilment service for Walmart – similar to FBA for Amazon sellers. There is a link available for their current customers to submit their Walmart application and speed up the approval process.

Another great option is to apply through your PayPal seller account. There is also a direct link within your PayPal business account to get you started.

Tip 3: Customer Service must be in place and running smoothly

Customer Service

There is a list of requirements for Walmart sellers when it comes to customer service. It’s not enough to list an email address that you check once in a while, or direct callers to a Google Voice number. Think of the kind of customer service YOU want to receive from Walmart. This is what they insist you provide.

Tip 4: Know Your Audience

Every market is attractive to specific customers. Walmart isn’t the place customers go to find vintage, refurbished, or one of a kind products. That said, they are not looking for one more seller of merchandise they already provide.  Having a product that is not already oversaturated, and also is desirable to Walmart customers is a must.

Tip 5: Get Your Pricing Right

research

Walmart is constantly checking that prices on your products are in line with the same (and even similar) items. Not only on Walmart.com, but also on Amazon, Ebay and other major online retailers. This will not be a place that are able to charge higher prices by making your items look prettier. Items considered overpriced by their algorithm are removed! Walmart doesn’t play when it comes to keeping prices low, even with 3rd party sellers.

Tip 6: Keep the Customer Happy

Delivery

Besides offering competitive prices and excellent customer service, the most thing customers care about most is fulfilment. Walmart wants to know that you have an organized inventory system, same-day shipping, consistent stock, and warehouses in the US.

Getting started with Walmart Marketplace will take some time and attention to detail. Why not check out Selling On Walmart.
